It is so good to be back in the beautiful Bay of islands again. 12/12/15 – 14/12/15
I came to Paihia with family in 2001 on my first visit to New Zealand and i have been really looking forward to coming back. It is as i remember, gorgeous blue sea with islands dotted around as far as the eye can see. it is a cute little town – though it was packed yesterday which was a surprise until we noticed a huge cruise ship just off shore. we had a wander round a couple of craft markets and then into a wee cafe overlooking the beach. First on the list was a visit to Haruru Falls, a small waterfall where you can walk along the top of it. A mooch a round the shops and then a chilled out meal in one of the over water restaurants kitted out with lounge garden furniture including huge day beds.
Today we went Parasailing! I was a bit nervous as i’m not good with heights but it was fantastic, yay!! Once we were up in the air it was so calm and peaceful it was like floating. And despite some moody looking clouds we could see for miles. What a brilliant way to see the numerous islands of this stunning area. The boys on the boat took photo’s and a short video and i took loads of pics from way up there (1200 ft to be exact) and one of us (me) let go of the straps and waved my arms about – and took a few selfies. What a blast 🙂
Then it was on the ferry to Russell. A lot quieter than my last visit but then it was new year 14 years ago. Also a lot smaller than i remember but that could be due to the lack of crowds. Russell has loads of quaintness with a small waterfront and numerous old buildings housing shops and restaurants. we booked a mini bus trip for an hours journey round the town, its buildings and beaches to learn more about the history of what used to be New Zealands capital. The old guy running the tour even pointed out his own house, bless.
The Bay of Islands is still one of my favourite places.
Well done brave man, it’s not the heights for me but the sharks circling underneath 😈 sounds like a wonderful time in a gorgeous area. Roy your writing is so expressive I can picture the things you write about. What a blast you both are having! Having hail here in south is, stay where you are 😠
