Meknes & Volubilis – Morrocco

Morocco – Meknes & Volubilis 17/10/16 – 18/10/16
Day 3
This morning we had a guided tour of the old town in Meknes. A beautiful yet dirty, smelly area of the crumbling city, with very narrow streets which was packed with locals selling everything from brass lanterns to leather goods, from silk material to raw meat – oh yes have I mentioned the flies, they were here in their thousands. Irritating little buggers. In the midst of this expansive market we were shown a small food outlet, where our included lunch was a camel burger!!!!! Nope I (Roy) was never going to eat in this filthy derelict fly ridden establishment, however Tina and everyone else did. Everyone said it was tasty, but looking at Tina’s and seeing hers had been cooked “rare” I think I made the right decision. We then headed to After this we got back in the mini bus and were driven an hour or so through some spectacular scenery to Volubilis – a historic archaeological site. Which is now a world heritage site and was once a provincial Roman capital. Wow this place was amazing, Roman ruins of every nature as far as the eye could see, including the remains of a palace, a Basilica, and an extensive township. Some remains of houses still had beautiful mosaic tiling still in contact on the floors. A truly amazing place, full of history and culture from another time. Then it was time to board our mini bus again for a 2 ½ journey to Fes. Once there we settled into our rooms before going out as a group for a traditional Moroccan evening meal.
