Bali – Sanur
Our 9th stop in Bali. An hours drive South East from Ubud, is the lovely seaside town of Sanur. 8/5/16 – 12/5/16
We’re staying in the Warisana and what a beauty it is. The temperature is in the late 20s, and humidity has ceased as well. However magnificent nightly thunderstorms are making their way here. There awesome lighting up the skies with sheet and folk lightening both at the same time. Still no rain though.
We followed our normal routine, check in, then change and straight to the pool. The pool is big and very, very warm. On the first evening we walked into Casablanca Bar, about 4 doors down from our digs. The flyer on the walk stated Sundays is Beatles tribute band. Wow were they good. Also the bar had happy hour cocktails all night buy 1 get 1 free. They were yummy as and we took full advantage of their Sunday night special. The band did 2 sets playing all the favourites, and some lesser known songs of theirs. I recognized a couple as “B” side songs. They were really impressive, the 4 male Balinese singers, dressed in black and trying their hardest at a scouser accent, we a real hit with the audience. What more we weren’t the oldest their either (for the first time in weeks), everyone had a blast.
The next day we decided to go back to Kuta for last minute cheap shopping. Kuta is great for that with 2 very large shopping malls. The latest shop to hit Bali, (so our driver stated) is Starbucks! So we just had to indulge in the latest trend. Looking on line at things to do in Sanur, we came across the Odyssey cruise, so booked it for the following day.
Our guide picked us up by 8am and drove us back to somewhere near Candi dasa. We were there just after 9am, and hung around for an hour an half before we were asked to register. They even took our weight and gave us life jackets. Yes we were ready to board the Odyssey, a small submarine, seating around 32 people in one go. One on board and in our seats, we felt the engines starting and heard the “blip”…….”blip”………”blip” every few seconds, (as you do when watching a movie of a sub). We were informed by our guide that we were going about 33 meters down, thats 100ft, in the ocean. Wow it was brilliant, however sitting next to a family of 6 with an 18 month kid screaming wasn’t so good, but we were able to see lots of fish, shipwrecks etc and the Coral. I’ve talked a bit about coral bleaching in previous blogs and this has to be the worst case of it. All the Coral was brown and in most places dead, not good at all, however the fish were plentiful, and we were under around 45 minutes. What followed was a fantastic buffet lunch before our return to Sanur.
So normal routine again after an adventure – back to the hotel, swim, shower and drinks. We ventured out again and only got a few shops down the road, before seeing a “specials” sign outside a spa. And as it’s been ages since our last, (about 3 days), we went in and had full pedicure and foot scrub. Excellent.
We only have 24 hours left in Bali so decided to spend the morning on the beach, before our lunchtime routine – swim, shower and cocktails. Later we went to a local street stall selling fab food. We had Mie Goran Ayam (chicken fried rice) with a side of Cap Cay (veg stew), as ever these were delicious. We also spotted a 5D movie thing, so went in. What it was, was a 15 minute movie – Apocalypse – a zombie v end of the world v derelict asylum. Screams galore by the both of us and very entertaining. 3D with glasses, 4D as the chairs we were sat in moved, and 5D cos we got sprayed with water. Great fun. We didn’t know until we came out that we were being taped for everyone outside to watch our response during the movie.
Well only 6 hours before we leave for the airport to fly to Kuala Lumpa so better get some shut eye. More to follow from Malaysia.
(T) my highlights of Bali have been Ubud and the day tour, Sanur, water rafting, riding Lady Gaga, and not forgetting Gili Trewangan (Lombok).
Overall I love Bali but some places including the sea are full of trash. In a lot of areas piles of rotting rubbish are not only an eyesore but stink the place up. Not good, they really need to do more to tackle the issue.
