Cyclone Winston Fiji

20160221_112429Just a quick update from Fiji and the cyclone that has wrecked havoc.

We have been in Fiji for 3 weeks, we decided to cancel our flight and stay a bit longer. We are in Denarau, near Nadi. Yesterday the port was getting prepared for the cyclone, boarding up windows, moving boats etc. The cyclone hit the main land about 8pm and we got it here from about 10pm. Was pretty scarey, when the balcony glass blew in we decided to haul the mattress downstairs and prop it in front of the lounge patio windows just in case. I hate high winds at the best of times so I couldn’t settle and the noise was horrendous. After a couple of wines and a diazapam I dozed off. The appt resort here doesn’t look too bad, mail some other blown out balcony glass and shutters ripped out. We now have thunder storms and torrential rain. We are still under curfew so have not been able to go to the port to see if we can help in anyway.

We are due into Brisbane on Tuesday but waiting on news if flights can go ahead as weather will remain stormy. Our thoughts go out to all the wonderful fijians and their families.

What an experience – we were relieved you weren’t on one of the far flung islands when the cyclone struck. You would have been pleased to get on that plane, even though it turned out to be one of the worst flights ever! Love Fiona and Steve xx
